Just A Spark - Episode 12

Lyrics

Hi everybody, Jonathan Richman here, out in the sun, here in Northern California
Where I've been real happy with what we've done over the last several months
With just a spark on Journey From The Dark

I'm recording what's going to be for the July issue which will be the last one for a while because we're making a record and I'm going to be thinking about that.
We're going to have the same crew that we used on the album "Sa" with Jerry Harrison and Nicole Montalbano and my drummer Tommy and
If we can get hold of the fabulous guitar player El Kenny
Once again we might, we'll see but anyway
And so I'll be thinking about that
And then we're going on the road again in October it looks like
It looks like it's going to happen throughout the Midwest, Chicago, Minneapolis, Milwaukee
And a lot of those dates will be with the wonderful Bonnie Prince Billy
Who we worked with last year, right before
The last shows we played right before everything shut down
Were with Bonnie Prince, Billie and Emmett Kelly on guitar
And we're gonna have that happen again
And so that'll take up all my thoughts and we'll be traveling
And uh, so this has been cool
Before I leave ya, um, for a while
I wanna reflect on something with ya
Um, I can't stand waste on things like that
I'm always, sometimes I'm always saving boxes, saving things
Just because I hate to waste them
You know, clothes, I hate to waste those
I'm always giving away things like that and
Anyway, now's an interesting time for recycling stuff because I just found out that the book
Industry is having a difficult time right now because some big electronic delivery firms
Are using a lot of the cardboard in this world.
Well that sounds like a tragedy, so now in bookstores they'll just have 3 or 4 copies of a new book, but they won't be able to order 20 backup copies because of this cardboard shortage.
Well, to folks listening to a show like this, there might be someone out there, people out there in different things like...
Cloth, bamboo, hemp, and kinaf. This might be the time for all those things like people who make things out of recycled cotton. This might be the time to get together with the book industry.
Talk to big publishers and stuff
This might be the time when people will be interested
Like for example we were using KNAF paper
Um, you know it's sort of like a bamboo product
A plant to print all the stuff on the mailing list that
We used to have, that we still I think have, you know for tours like little things come in the mail, postcards, you know like cardboard postcards with like the tour schedules.
We used to be able to do with KNAF paper but then that wasn't happening because of pricing and this and that. Maybe it's time for that again.
Maybe all kinds of interesting doors will open as other doors close
So people in the book industry, don't despair
Maybe all kinds of cool stuff are about to happen

[And for this last episode, I figured we'd sing a little in Italian
And maybe do some French stuff
I talk about the poet Pasolini, who I love, you know, like the guy who lived
From about 1920 to about 1975 and died in Rome in'75]

Chiusa la festa su una Roma sorda ogni ingenuatesa
Chiusa la sera come inmundizie al vento
The party's over folks, su una Roma sorda ogni ingenuatezza
In a Rome that's deaf to any innocent expectation
Chiusa la sera, yeah holidays over, party's over
Come inmundizie al vento, just like trash in the wind
I passi del retorno
Le voci e fischi vanno morendo vasti per le strade
E vuote nelle androne
Ah ma dove il caos della città
Si giela in prati illuminati
I lumi costolati
Lungo via l'omorati
In pace di morte
E già la vecchia notte
Ah yes
Chiusa la
Chiusa la festa
Su una Roma sorda
Ah ogni giorno
Chiusa la sera come i modizi e al vento

A little Pasolini for ya
